Our Strategy
The Alliance has defined a 10-year goal that capitalizes on what members can achieve if we work collaboratively, with one voice:
By 2030, inland fisheries are effectively incorporated into global development and conservation agendas.
To reach this goal we have identified three strategic areas that work in tandem.
Pillar 1 (Thought Leadership):
Define a vision and goals for achieving equitably governed, sustainable inland fisheries using the best available knowledge.
Objective 1: In 2021, produce a set of core principles defining equitably governed, sustainable inland fisheries.
Objective 2: By 2022, provide recommendations for best methods, approaches and tools to facilitate stakeholder participation, assessment, and management measures for sustainable fisheries.
Objective 3: By 2022, advance one or more globally applicable indices/indicators to track inland fisheries and guide policy.
Pillar 2 (Communication):
Champion the importance of inland fisheries with policymakers, private sector actors, donors, and NGOs influencing water-food-energy-environment nexus decisions.
Objective: In 2021, create and begin implementation of a strategic, coordinated communication plan aimed at target audiences.
Pillar 3 (Operationalization):
Catalyze adoption, integration, and implementation of core principles and recommendations by strategic actors.
Objective 1: By 2025, alliance members have made specific, measurable commitments toward sustainably managed inland fisheries, in alignment with alliance priorities.
Objective 2: By 2027, public donors have integrated inland fisheries safeguards and priorities into relevant policies and environmental standards.
Objective 3: By 2028, global policy instruments have been improved and revised to incorporate sustainable inland fisheries, based on alliance recommendations.
Objective 4: By 2030, strategic partners in the agriculture, water resources, hydropower, and aquaculture sectors have adopted and are acting on alliance principles.
